On this day in 1986

On this day in 1986 this little man came into my life and it hasn't been the same since :)

My eldest son was born at 4.10 p.m. 25 years ago today, after a often complicated pregnancy, and a c-section due to the fact that he was breach and a big baby.  He spent the first 24 hours in the nic fighting for life, after being 11 minutes without oxygen at birth.  The first thing I remember is the Doctors telling me not to expect him to be here in the morning, and that perhaps they will have to airlift him out through the night, when questioned how bad he was, they said they wouldn't know until he didnt progress at the rate he was supposed to.  Well he talked early, walked at 12 months, started to read at 3.  At 5 he was diagnosed with ADHD and put on ritalin, and for all his school life I dreaded the call from the school to tell me he'd done something or other to someone or other.  In year 9 it was bandied about that maybe, perhaps he has High IQ Aspergers, which it appears he has.  At 17 he took himself of his medication and sat his HSC unmedicated.  Now he is at Charles Sturt University studying a Bachelor of Nursing, and for those of you who haven't read my previous posts this is what he now looks like.

To me he will always be possum, to my sister he is the Professor, to my mother hes My Boy, but to everyone else hes either Doc or Ross, so my little man who is now not so little, Happy Birthday, theres not a day goes by that I would trade.  Have a great one.

Love

  1. How hard those early days must have been. I can't imagine!! My son had a difficult birth, and didn't move his left arm for 2 weeks after.. it was a wait and see situation if he would recover the use of it or not. He is fine tho, and, like you, I love him more than life itself. Someone once said that having a child is like having your heart walk around outside your body for the rest of your life.. it's so true! Happy Birthday to your son! :)

  3. You must be so proud of him- and what he is achieving- it must have been a worrying time back then...
